Ghost of a Chance
by Adrienne Rich
You see a man
trying to think.
You want to say
to everything:
keep off! Give him room!
but you only watch,
terrified
the old consolations
will get him at last
like a fish
half-dead from flopping
and almost crawling
across the shingle,
the raw, agonizing
air
till a wave
pulls it back blind into the triumphant
sea.
the first time I read ghost of a chance
I really didnt get it, so i had to read
it again then I got it more than I did
before. I it is talking about a person
who sees a man trying to think and the
person that is looking at him and wants to
talk to him but he/she is saying to leve
him only, give him room! but you only watch
terrified,I think that means that the person
wants to talk to him but you are terrified so
you are watching him
